I originally started working in the electrical industry back in 2004. After spending 4 years studying at the University of Otago and finishing my degree and post graduate diploma I decided I wanted to see the world.
I never planned to get into the electrical industry but my brother (also an electrician) was also in London and gave me advice on getting into some electrical labouring work.
I spent close to 3 years based in London where I worked on a number of construction sites. This included the very large commercial site which was to become the global headquarters for the pharmaceutical giant Glaxo Smith Kline. This helped pay my way for living and, most importantly, travel costs to visit the many countries in the area.
I really enjoyed this "hands-on" work much more than sitting in an office all day in front of a computer. On returning to Dunedin, I started an adult apprenticeship and never looked back from then on!
I have always had it in the back of my mind that owning my own business was something that I would do some day. With a number of years of experience in the electrical industry I was now in a great position to do so.
With the economy in good health and the demand for tradesman and electricians peaking it was time to take the plunge and create a business for myself and family.
And of course, there is my wife Wendy who I could not do this without. She takes care of the accounting side of things and is an extremely important part of keeping Jones Electrical Services running like a well-oiled machine
I consider my workmanship standards to be excellent. It’s one thing getting a job from a client but if you want repeat business it’s essential to have good workmanship.
I treat any work just like I would if I was doing it to my own property. Good workmanship is the most important aspect of running a successful electrical business.
